For most residential pest fumigations in South Africa, you should stay out of the treated areas until the treatment has dried, which is usually a few hours. Children, babies, pregnant women, pets and anyone with asthma should be the most cautious. Always follow the specific re-entry time your pest control technician gives you for the products used.
What affects the re-entry time?
- The products and method used (spray, gel bait, dust or fogging)
- How much of the home was treated
- Ventilation and weather: humid or cold days slow drying
- Who will be in the home: babies, pets and people with asthma need more care
Is gel baiting different?
Yes. Cockroach gel baits are placed in cracks, hinges and voids and often need little or no time out of the home. Residual sprays and full fumigations usually need you to stay out until surfaces are dry.
How to air out your home after fumigation
- Open windows and doors when you return
- Run fans if available
- Wipe food preparation surfaces and tables
- Keep pets off treated surfaces until they are dry
- Avoid washing treated skirting and corners for as long as advised
Structural gas fumigation is different
Tenting a building with gas is a specialised process with much longer exclusion periods and must be cleared as safe by the operator before anyone re-enters. Most home fumigations in South Africa are residual insecticide treatments, not gas fumigations.
Frequently asked questions
When can pets go back in after fumigation?
Pets can usually return once treated surfaces are completely dry. Birds and fish are more sensitive, so keep birds out longer and keep tanks covered as advised.
Is it safe to sleep in the house after fumigation?
In most residential treatments, yes, once the re-entry time has passed and the home has been aired. Follow the technician's instructions.
What if I feel unwell after fumigation?
Leave the area, get fresh air and contact a doctor or poison information centre if symptoms continue. Tell them which products were used.
